Chapter Two
Dethrent Vealaron

Callum jogged through the open doorway. Spotting me, he shouted loud enough for people to look up from their food. “Dethrent, you are building compact muscle. Stop eating and get up. We are leaving.”

All the animal-masked people returned to their eating.

Callum was wearing his customary fox mask; it was distinct to him, as all our masks were. I ignored his command and let my thoughts wander as I continued eating

Dethrent… I hated my name, ugly, and nothing feminine about it. I would have loved a name such as Evangeline or Saphine. They could have named me anything for my new life, but they chose Dethrent. It means disease.

A bunch of old cynical people, ruining everyone’s mood for no reason. My father and uncle weren’t like that. Don’t think about that.

Reaching me, Callum pushed the delicious piece of chocolate cake out of my hands. Thoroughly angered, I lost my posture immediately and grumbled something like.

“I was eating that.”

Speaking hurt in the wolf mask I wore around . My upper, completely split lip scratched against the fabric, irritating the sensitive nerves there. I was born with the condition. It was a shame, my master had always told me, because all my other features were beautiful, stunning even. A little pain shot through me when thinking about it.
